| Who Are We? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Confirmation is a rite whereby our youth are called upon to accept their baptism through a public service of affirmation and celebration. In preparation for confirmation, 8th grade students spend a year exploring their faith, learning about Christianity and the Bible, and participating in the life of the church. Affirming Faith is the United Church of Christ curriculum for confirmation that will guide the classes. It is based on the UCC "Statement of Faith." Throughout the year the confirmation class participates in various forms of church life by regularly attending worship, assisting in teaching, ushering, and other service projects that are fundamental to our lives as Christians. In addition to exploring basic church and biblical history, the program encourages our 8th graders to become familiar with the many ministries of our own congregation. Confirmation Class meets regularly on Wednesdays from 5:30-7:00 PM in the Community Room (L24). Students will be confirmed at a special service of Confirmation during the 10:45 AM worship service on Sunday, April 28, 2013. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Statements of Faith | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Dear Confirmands, Here is some information to help you with your statements of faith. Your statement should be more than two paragraphs, but not more than one full page. They are due on April 20 during our regular class at 5:30 p.m. You will be asked to present your statement to one of the leaders: Alexi Hagedorn, Mike Chakoian, or Rev. Dave Inglis.
Here are some questions to help you form your thoughts. Read the quotations and the scripture passages, and answer the questions below: 1. God creates You call the worlds into being, create persons in your own image, and set before each one the ways of life and death. Scripture: Genesis chapters 1-3 What does it mean to you to be created in God's image? In what ways are you a reflection of God? 2. God seeks to save You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin. Scripture: John 3:16-21 Have you ever known or experienced God's holy love? Have you ever experienced aimlessness? What does sin mean to you? How could God's love help save someone from being aimless? 3. God judges You judge people and nations by your righteous will declared through prophets and apostles. Scripture: Hosea 2:16-20 Have you ever been judged? How does God express judgment? 4. God comes to us in Christ In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen Savior, you have come to us and shared our common lot, conquering sin and death and reconciling the world to yourself. Scripture: Acts 10:33-44; Philippians 2:5-11; Romans 3:21-26; 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 What does it mean that God shares our common lot? How has Jesus shared this with us? What do you think are the ways of "sin and death" in our culture today? How does God's reconciling power challenge and conquer these? 5. God bestows the Holy Spirit You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races. Scripture: Acts chapters 1-2; 1 Corinthians chapter 12; Ephesians 4:1-6, 11-13 What does it mean for people of all ages, tongues, and races to be bound together? How do you feel bound together with people of other ages, tongues, or races? What could you or your congregation do to make the ties even stronger? 6. God calls us to discipleship You call us into your church to accept the cost and joy of discipleship, to be your servants in the service of others, to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil, to share in Christ's baptism and eat at his table, to join him in his passion and victory. Scripture: Matthew 25:31-40; Mark 10:35-45; Matthew 28:19-20 In what ways do you or your church engage in service to others? In what ways do you or your church resist the powers of evil? 7. God promises You promise to all who trust you forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace, courage in the struggle for justice and peace, your presence in trial and rejoicing, and eternal life in your realm which has no end. Scriptures: Romans chapter 12; Revelation 21:1-7 How is a promise of courage in the struggle for justice and peace different from a promise of victory? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
